Sciatica Treatment Q & A

What is sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in your body, running from your lower back all the way down to your toes. It begins as a cluster of nerve fibers in your lower spine, connecting to form one large nerve.

The large nerve travels through an opening in your pelvis. The sciatic nerve branches off into smaller nerves as it travels the whole way down to the toes.

Sciatica is the term given to the pressure on the sciatic nerve that shoots pain down one or both legs. Some other common symptoms of sciatica are:

  • Lower back pain
  • Hip and pelvic pain or soreness
  • Weakness and numbness
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Burning or tingling sensation in the legs
  • Numbness in legs or feet

The pain can range from mild to severe and can have a significant, negative impact on your mobility. Typically, sciatica only affects one side of the body.

If you’re experiencing loss of bladder or bowel control, this is one of the more severe symptoms, and it’s especially important you seek medical care. Doing so ensures your sciatica doesn’t develop into an additional complication.

What causes sciatica?

Sciatica can be caused by:

  • Pregnancy-related postural changes
  • Herniated discs
  • Muscle spasms
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Stenosis
  • Pinched nerve roots

Certain other factors can exacerbate your sciatic pain, such as:

  • Lack of frequent exercise
  • Sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress
  • Being overweight
  • Improper posture

The most common cause of sciatica is a ruptured or herniated disc in the spine pressing against the nerve. Sciatica can also occur as a result of other spinal-related complications, such as bone spurs, the narrowing of the spinal canal, and arthritis.

What are the treatment options for sciatica?

Some of the treatment options for sciatica include:

  • Injections to help heal tight, restricted muscles and joints
  • Heat or cold therapy
  • Stretching and massage-like techniques
  • Vax-D Spinal Decompression: a specialized treatment table that reduces disc pressure and removes nerve pressure
  • Bracing and supports
  • Spinal manipulation: the gentle, low-force pressure using hands or an instrument to improve joint mobility and reduce nerve pressure
  • Physiotherapy: exercises aimed at restoring your mobility and releasing pressure on the nerve

If you’re dealing with sciatica symptoms, one of the skilled specialists at Aligned Medical Group, P.C. can walk you through their range of treatment options. Call to set up an appointment or book online.
